Licensing¶
What governs your copy of FaceCue, and the one use it is not licensed for.
The Licence You Bought¶
FaceCue is licensed through the Unity Asset Store, under the Asset Store Terms of Service and EULA. That agreement is between you and Firecrest, the publisher, and it covers how many people may use a seat, what you may ship, and everything else about the licence. Unity's page is the authority on all of it.
This page covers what Firecrest, as the publisher, does and does not consent to.
AI and Machine Learning Training¶
Under the Unity Asset Store Terms of Service (section 3.8(v)) and the Asset Store End User License Agreement (section 2.2.1.1(g)), training an artificial intelligence or machine learning model on an Asset requires express consent. Firecrest, as the Provider of FaceCue, does not grant that consent, for FaceCue or for what it produces.
This is our own position, and it is the whole of what we can say. It states what Firecrest does and does not consent to as the Provider. It does not speak for Unity, and it adds nothing to the Asset Store EULA.
Within that, our non-consent includes but is not limited to:
- training, fine-tuning, evaluating against, or distilling any model from FaceCue's code, data, models, recipes, rig maps, libraries, or any other part of this package;
- training, fine-tuning, evaluating against, or distilling any model from anything FaceCue produces, including baked cue files, viseme and expression curves, generated rig maps, and recordings or captures of a character driven by FaceCue;
- using FaceCue as an annotation, labelling, or alignment step while assembling a data set for such a model, whether or not FaceCue's own files form part of the finished data set;
- assembling, publishing, selling, or otherwise distributing a data set derived from any of the above.
This applies whether the purpose is commercial or non-commercial.
Ordinary use of FaceCue is unaffected. Cue files, animation, and footage produced with FaceCue ship in your project as the Asset Store EULA provides. This notice is about training models on FaceCue and on what it produces, not about machine learning your product uses for its own purposes.
Third-party components bundled with FaceCue remain governed by their own licenses, which are listed in Third-Party Notices.txt.
Written permission may be requested at support@facecue.net, strictly for academic or non-commercial research. Every request is read. Permission is given in writing or not at all.
The Same Words Ship With the Package
This section is AI Training Notice.txt, which sits beside the README in the FaceCue folder.
Your Own Data¶
The question people usually ask next is the reverse one, and the answer is that nothing of yours goes anywhere. The models run on your machine, and FaceCue has no service behind it. See Does it need an internet connection or a cloud service? in the FAQ.
